The Tuskegee Architecture and Construction Alumni Association (TACAA) is proud to announce that the Dean of the Tuskegee University Robert R. Taylor School of Architecture and Construction Science has been officially announced - Dr. Carla Bell, PhD, NOMA, Assoc. AIA!
Dr. Carla Jackson Bell is currently a faculty member and the Director of Multicultural Affairs in the College of Architecture, Design and Construction (CADC) at Auburn University. She is recognized as the first and only woman architecture faculty to receive tenure in the Department of Architecture at Tuskegee University and one of only 12 tenured African American women architecture faculty in the United States. Throughout her 22 years of professional experience in administration and teaching, Dr. Bell has received over $806,000.00 from research grants and small donations to support diverse initiatives for new learning environments which concentrate on under-represented students' cultural experiences in architecture, design and construction programs at Tuskegee and Auburn Universities.
Her overall responsibility at Auburn is to recruit, retain, and advance minority faculty, staff, and students and seek funding for diversity programs in the college. Dr. Bell’s educational specialties, culturally relevant curricula content and teaching approaches, are structured and organized practices that she uses to accelerate student learning and academic growth for faculty. Her new book, Space Unveiled: Invisible Cultures in the Design Studio, which was published by Routledge Research in Architecture series in July 2014, is an example of putting her ideology on culturally competent curricula into practice, especially in design studios and seminar courses.
The appointment of Dean has never been more imperative as the School of Architecture faces an accreditation visit by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) in 2017. Although this is one year away, the Architecture Program Reports (ARPs) are due September 7th, 2016.
Based on the 2014 NAAB Conditions Part One (1) Section 2 – Resources, each accredited program must exhibit the following:
I.2.1 Human Resources and Human Resource Development: The program must demonstrate that it has appropriate human resources to support student learning and achievement. Human resources include full- and part-time instructional faculty, administrative leadership, and technical, administrative, and other support staff.
I.2.2 Physical Resources: The program must describe the physical resources available and how they support the pedagogical approach and student achievement
I.2.3 Financial Resources: The program must demonstrate that it has appropriate financial resources to support student learning and achievement.
I.2.4 Information Resources: The program must demonstrate that all students, faculty, and staff have convenient, equitable access to literature and information, as well as appropriate visual and digital resources that support professional education in architecture
I.2.5 Administrative Structure and Governance
· Administrative Structure: The program must describe its administrative structure and identify key personnel within the context of the program and school, college, and institution.
· Governance: The program must describe the role of faculty, staff, and students in both program and institutional governance structures. The program must describe the relationship of these structures to the governance structures of the academic unit and the institution.
