DETROIT DEPARTMENT OF PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT HIRING!

If you were born and raised and plan to stay in the Detroit area...it's time to reaffirm your commitment!

If you were born and raised and went away from this city you love...it's time to come home!

If you have visited and left intrigued by the Spirit of Detroit...it's time to return!

And if you've NEVER been to Detroit but are fascinated by its place in popular American culture...it's time to make Detroit your home!

After months of re-imagining the role of planning and design in Detroit, after rewriting every single job description in an effort to create a dynamic new organization, and after raising salaries to compete nationally for top talent, the City of Detroit Department of Planning and Development is proud to announce a host of job openings--all of them new. Our goal is nothing short of rewriting the rules of urban design and planning in Detroit and restoring to our residents the quality of urban life worthy of a great American city. We can only accomplish this with the best and brightest minds working in urban planning, preservation, and design today!

Under my guidance, the Department of Planning and Development will:

1) launch three community-based planning offices in 2016 ("neighborhood home-bases"), each with an associate design director, a community location, and a full planning and design team comprised of all the design disciplines;

2) create a new division of strategic planning, including an office of sustainability;

3) create a new division of zoning innovation and historic preservation; and

4) open "The Office of Yes," which will administer special projects fueled by grant/foundation dollars.

We are in the process of hiring at every professional level, from junior to senior--city planners, landscape architects, architects, urban designers, and historic preservation professionals. Please take a look at the new positions here and see if any fit your experience, talents, and skills. We have also attached a few PDF job descriptions for leadership positions we are filling in addition to what you'll find on the website.

This is a major career opportunity for anyone driven to transform a great American city. There's no question that we are assembling a talented, start-up team of professionals able to engage community, work across multiple disciplines and departments of City Hall, and act as a single, coordinated team under the Duggan Administration. We are very aware that this is our moment and we have been called to write an important chapter in Detroit history that will transform urban life for the better for Detroiters--and we welcome your talent and commitment.
